Sustainability and the Environment

Ropes Crossing is surrounded by 900 hectares of Regional Park, and we understand the fragility of our native environment.

When we began planning Ropes Crossing, we made a commitment to protect and enhance the natural environment.

Our environmental initiatives for Ropes Crossing include:

  • Preserving more than 20% of Ropes Crossing as parks, open space, nature reserves and wetlands.
  • Planting native flora throughout the community. Not only does this ensure that our plant life matches the local environment, but these native plants require less water and reduce the energy consumed during maintenance.
  • Treating and recycling wastewater for non-drinking uses, such as flushing toilets and watering lawns
  • Working with local groups, including Conservation Volunteers Australia, to host seed collection, weed removal and habitat rehabilitation programs.
  • Ensuring buildings meet BASIX requirements for energy and water efficiency.
  • Educating residents about how to be more environmentally aware.

Recycled Water at Ropes Crossing

The Ropes Crossing Recycled Water Scheme is part of a Sydney Water initiative to treat and recycle wastewater in homes and parks.

Ropes Crossing uses recycled water for non-drinking purposes like flushing toilets and watering lawns.

We expect to save about 420 million litres from being drawn from Warragamba Dam each year – that’s equivalent to about 168 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Each home and business is being built with a dual pipe system – one for drinking water and one for recycled water.

Facts about Recycled Water

  • The recycled water in Ropes Crossing is treated by Sydney Water to a very high standard, as outlined in the ‘New South Wales Guidelines for Urban and Residential Use of Reclaimed Water 1993’.
  • It’s perfectly safe for toilet flushing, washing cars, irrigation and other household outdoor uses.
